Am I being Frugal?

I see some posts about how they are frugal with money, thought I'd try to figure out what I do to save and not spend. Of course ever since the pandemic it's a lot easier for everyone to not spend on things we don't need. There is no more shopping for fun, casual browsing the isles and shopping at malls. I have made some splurges for camping equipment, new sleeping bags, our screen porch shade tarp, a camping fan, an outdoor chair, and a new cooking grille and propane grill. Guess we did buy a lot of camping stuff but it's cheap compared to staying at a hotel and we don't want to do that during a pandemic! We also splurged on our vacation camping, we got restaurant take out a few times, purchased fudge and maple syrup. Paid for a camping site this year that added up to $100, we usually spend zero since we stay at remote campsites. Since our camp site was closed, we splurged on $18 per night and an extra $9 for the kids car. Pretty cheap in all for a vacation.

When you hear camping, usually you think it's cheap. After all, your not staying in a hotel spending $100 to $150 on up per night. All that camping gear adds up! If you keep your gear for years, or use it more than a couple of times, it pays for it's self in what you would have paid to stay in a hotel for the night or a few nights. We always do upgrades when something becomes available or easier to set up. We've purchased many tents over the years, the last few years, we up graded to instant tents, that are big! Easy to set up in 2 minutes and take down just as quick with no poles to deal with. Sure they are big, but bigger is better when camping or Glamping! Every year, we do purchase more air mattresses because they all never last the season. They aren't cheap either at $60 to 70 each. I'd switch to all cots if they didn't take up so much space. We try to fit as much as possible into our Toyota Highlander to take along to make our trip enjoyable.

Is camping frugal? Maybe after you have everything you need or do with less. It's what we enjoy so the cost isn't an issue. I'll buy anything to make life more comfortable while on vacation in the North woods.
