I have so much to share just because our vacation was sooo long! I'm just going to skip all over the place!
We found so many cool places to kayak and do a little fishing! We kayaked through this huge tunnel that went under the dirt road.
There are so many little lakes scattered all around the north shore. All very rocky!
We also spent a lot of time in the tiny town of Grand Marais. We'd get ice every day, some food and what ever else we were looking for! We needed a flash light and I was on the hunt for a trail camera! We had a lot of animal activity at night and I wanted to know what was out there! We never did see any animals but something would circle our tent. We found out, it was a toad!
The fog rolled in one night very quickly. As we were standing along the shore, it rolled in so fast. We were regretting our stay for dinner as we had a dark and foggy drive back to our campsite!
Do you see our car? The two kayaks on the roof?
It's crazy how the weather turns so fast on this big lake!
Most days we'd just have a picnic. We'd find some different places along logging road to bike, then back at the car, have our picnic. Some days we'd BBQ, or just have salads.
We saved the really nice days to be out on a lake, kayaking and fishing.
Some nights, we would just go back early to our campsite and cook dinner. That was pretty much the biggest decision of the day! What to eat for meals and what should we do for the day?
We filled out a few day passes to go into the BWCA with our kayaks. We'd just float, fish and check out the lakes.
I didn't even want to fish. When ever I did put my pole into the lake, I'd catch something and Steve wouldn't! I don't put bait on the hooks and I don't take the fish off! I make sure Steve does that part!
Another logging trail we biked down. They are usually over grown and hardly traveled. Only hunters with ATV's in the fall. We never see anyone ever!
A few days that were warmer, we sat on the shores of Lake Superior looking for agates. Mostly we would only find very small rocks. I collect rocks from our travels and add them to our rocks in the front yard. We have rocks from all over!
Some times it was nice to just sit, relax and not go any where all day. This was at the Lutsen resort. One of our favorite places to sit on the beach, have a meal with happy hour. There are always people, but not a lot.
Baker Lake is were we camped for 13 days. It's a small lake with a river that ran behind our campsite. We did one short portage to the other bigger lake in BWCA. It might have been short, but carrying two kayaks was heavy and it was a rough rocky path to the next lake.
Our kayaks are pretty easy to load up and unload. Steve lifts them up. We each take a side and tie them down.
It was pretty out there and most days the lakes were calm and glass!
Flowers were every where! Made for some pretty photos!
We didn't eat out much, but we did have a drink at the brewery on top of the roof. Tables were spaced apart, so we felt safe being around others while not wearing our mask.
Driving down the dirt roads late at night! We would go to some clearings and do star gazing the clear nights. It's so dark up there at night when the moon isn't shining.
The sun would go down and it would be twilight till 10:30pm!
One of the weird things we noticed was this crashed car just down the road from our campsite. It happened late, because we were star gazing the night before and it wasn't there. Woke up and got going early and there was this car, no people. A ranger pulled up and asked us about the car. Our campsite is the closest thing to were people could have walked for help! The car was there for 2 days? Still don't know what happened to the people?
Every morning, I'd put on a pot of water and heat it up. Some would be warm water to wash my face and some would be for a hot chocolate. Mornings would be a little cold around 55- 60*F. We'd some times when it was sunny, go to the river, sit on a rock in the sun and warm up drinking our coco. It also was a place to wash our dirty pots and pans.
We really didn't need the net for our screen porch. It did help keep inside the porch dry for cooking.
Over looking the town of Grand Marais, harbor.
I walked through some big puddles on the roads and was walking in shallow waters getting in and out of the kayaks. Not sure if I picked up some itchy bugs or ? The pharmacist said to soak my feet in warm water with a box of baking soda to draw out the itchy little bugs. I sat in a parking lot, up on the Gunflint trail soaking my feet for 20 minutes. I also used some spray to stop the itching. Talk about weird! 2nd time going up there and had itchy toes! It went away right after so I'm sure that helped!
Since we were on the Gun Flint Trail, we went back to Hungry Jack where we first went into BWCA some 25 years ago we used this outfitter to drop us off and pick us back up after 4 days. This is hungry jack lake.
It was a cold day, so we didn't kayak but did find out later it was a good fishing lake!
I found out that Boulder Lake, one lake over from where our campsite was located, we would get 2 bars of cell service. Enough to get some text messages and update our phones a little with news. We went there often to kayak, have a fire while having dinner or happy hour.
I tried a Little Rock stacking on the shores of Lake Superior. I tried to get Steve into a friendly competition but he wasn't feeling it!
Found yet another rock that looked like a heart!
We also looked at land for sale. We are tempted to purchase our own slice of the north shore! Lake property is too much but a few acres of just our own land to camp on would be nice. We just don't want to have to do a lot of tree cutting and land leveling to use the property. It was fun, just driving around and checking out a few lots in the area we like.
My SUV got pretty dirty with all the dirt road driving! We could hardly see out of the back window!
Just a big foot, hanging around!
So many great photos! Thank you for sharing your awesome trip. I love the rock stacking!
